I wasn't meaning to be sarcastic. Those were real life examples. The fact is most people just don't understand what it takes to mount a gate correctly , and what creates the least damage. I hang gates for a living so its my job to understand how to hang a gate properly and which is the best gate for the area . First off compression gates are not suitable for the tops of stairs.
On the wall side anything sticky will tear the paper off your drywall crerating much more damage than a little screrw or a anchor . A lot of different kinds of anchors pull free from the wall . You have to use a good type of anchor . Sometimes I strap to the ballast . Sometimes to the newl post depending on the situation . Sometimes I make clamps or screw directly . It all depends on the situation as to waht is strongets and looks best . Also what is most functional .
Universal moldings ? I haven't seen one yet that is truley universal . In fact I have been trying for years to figure one out . The most used one would be the one used on the newl post . Because newl post are hard to strap to . The universal one clamps . You won't find damage until you take it down , if there is any . It doesn't tapper to fit your post's shape . So you end up with the sharp end of the clamps hole being tightened against your newl post . Good chance for indentation on your post. Your told to be careful not to over tighten . How do you know when its tight enough and hasn't caused damage ? The wall moldings are ok and the one that clamps to the iron railing as well . I find them unsightly though . They weren't made to match your room or stair . You will probably live with these for a few years so its worth the extra effort to make something that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye . I believe universal moldings were made with the intent that you have some kind of option to install baby gates and also a way of selling a gate . Definately not the best solution in my oppinion. Most of my clients end up throwing them out if they tried using them.
