  • Use the proper gate at top of stairway . Never use pressure mounted gates at top of stairs .
  • Install proper protection around bannisters with open air space over 3 1/2 inches .
  • Install vent locks or window gaurd on windows to prevent them from opening more than 3 1/2 inches .
  • Place hearth gaurds around raised fireplace hearths .
  • Do not use table clothes when toddlers are present .
  • Keep all chemicals in thier original containers .
  • Make sure all purses are placed out of reach , especially ones with any medication inside .
  • If your TV stand isn't sturdy , buy one with a wide base and keep television back from edges .
  • Secure furniture that is tipsy to a wall .
  • Set water temperature no higher than 120 (F) or under 114 (F)
  • Never leave toddler in bathroom or tub alone. Toddlers can drown in 2 inches of water .
  • Place a lock on all toilets .
  • Lock up all garbage throughout your home .
  • Lock up cabinets containing perfumes, make - up, and other similar bathroom items .
  • Never use a crib manufactured before 1990 . Be sure mattress fits tigh on all 4 sides .
  • Remove bumper pads and mobiles when infant can sit alone .
  • Lower mattress to lowest position .
  • Don't place the crib near or under a window .
  • Be sure all blind cords throughout the home are secured and out of reach . Allow for growth .
  • Use a screw - in night light that is designed for child safety .
  • Be sure the garage door has an electric eye to stop the door and a reverse mechanism that functions . Lay a 2x4 under the door to test it .
